Day 110

This living room keeps going backwards! We are still hoping to have it finished (I know, delusional, right?) for Christmas. The floor in this room is the most compromised. Some of the joists don't actually rest on the sill and quite a few of the floor boards don't actually touch each other! They lost their tongues decades ago probably :( Unbelievably, the easiest way to fix the problems is to take up the whole floor (I hate going backwards) sister or replace the joists, then lay the floor boards once again, and replace any that have been eaten through from carpenter ants. The ants are long gone, but some of those boards were actually hollow! I must say the view from the basement shows beautiful old wood, it almost looks new. The good news (apparently) is that we will lay the floor tonight.............just as soon as the twitch in my eye disappears............ :(

  1. AKA. Rot, dry rot and carpenter ants. Five out of ten joists (in this room) will need to be replaced plus about half of the floor boards.

Thank you Harry Schell for keeping old style wood profiles in stock for crappy old houses!

    The laborer.
